Check out what Mitsubishi's Super Sports Utility concept!

Concept_ssu1
Presented here is our radical SSU, or Super Sports Utility, that combines the best attributes of a sports car with the room and practicality of an SUV. Think of it as an extreme sport vehicle, one designed to handle corners as well as handle your stuff.

Performance

The twin-turbo V6, producing a rip-snorting 310 horsepower, is mated to a 5-speed Sportronic™ transmission driving all four wheels. Also present is Active Yaw Control, developed from our rich World Rally experiences

Flexibility

The roomy interior allows first-class comfort and stretch-out room, with a cargo area large enough for lots of gear. Nets in the doors allow every inch of the SSU to be used efficiently.

Instruments

The dashboard houses a large color monitor with a mouse-like disc to control the audio and climate systems, satellite navigation, hands-free phone and a pager message center. When the SSU is parked, the monitor can be used to play video games and access the Internet.

Exterior

The dramatic, powerful body continues the "geo-mechanical" design theme as first seen on the SST concept car and, later, the 2000 Eclipse. The SSU features thin, vertical headlamps and huge, round LED driving lights for brighter light.

Outlander handles the load without the flash

2011-08-24_1334
"This week’s 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander test vehicle may not be the flashiest vehicle on the road, but it gets major kudos for passing pretty much every challenge posed by The Annual Camping Trip."

It’s during this summer long weekend outdoor adventure that a vehicle is asked to do everything from transporting loads of camping equipment and passengers, to passing slower vehicles on two-lane country roads, to driving through narrow park paths and then not taking up the entire campsite with its size.

There are three Outlander trim levels available, with my tester being the entry-level ES with four-wheel drive. It comes equipped with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a continuously variable transmission.

Although on paper power is on the lower end of things when stacked up against four-cylinder-equipped competitors, it does a more than adequate job when it comes to the aforementioned passing, even when overflowing with three adults and all their gear.

In automatic mode, the CVT is about as nondescript and staid as they come, but things actually become surprisingly fun when you move it into manual mode. Doing this allows you to move up and down between six preset gears without the use of a clutch. After trying out manual mode, it’s rare I leave the CVT to do things on its own.

Built on a performance-oriented platform, the Outlander is probably the top choice in its segment for the driver who cherishes excitement over everything else. Steering is responsive and its handling rivals that of numerous smaller vehicles one might think would be more nimble.

The downside is that the Outlander’s ride quality suffers. The driver and front passenger seats are pretty good (including over extended trips), but road imperfections are even more pronounced in the rock-hard second row seats.

The Outlander ES forgoes the XLS trim’s full-time “Super All-Wheel Control” for the non-super “All-Wheel Control”, which is activated manually by the driver via a knob behind the shifter.

Though I don’t have a chance to thoroughly test its abilities, it’s worth noting the vehicle can be changed to “four-wheel drive” and “lock” mode any time those unpredictable situations arise.

As alluded to earlier, the cargo-carrying capacity of the Outlander is generous. The two higher-priced trim levels lose some of that ability with silly third-row seats, but the ES gets a flat carpeted load floor with extra underfloor storage. Plastic strips keep items from sliding around, and the mini-tailgate is handy for loading up heavier items, as well as keeping loose items from falling out when just the rear hatch is open.

The rear seats can’t be removed, but they do fold and tumble forward easily with the flip of a latch, adding even more space to the mix. When they’re being used by occupants, they recline slightly for a little added comfort.

The one thing that still sets the Outlander apart from others in its class is its subpar interior. The cockpit looks far too plasticky, and buttons and knobs are too small for the large-of-hand and the hard-of-sight. It doesn’t help that certain activation lights (for things like air conditioning or the rear defroster) are difficult to see in daylight.

Despite being a little rough around the edges, the Outlander manages to set itself far enough apart from other vehicles in its segment. There are plenty of options when it comes to features, powertrains and seating, and there’s only one model in the line-up that comes in at over $30,000.

If you’re looking for something that’s a legitimate mix of sport and utility, the Outlander is worth consideration.

AWD Mitsubishi Lancer SE coming this fall

Lancer_se_piece
Getting an all wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer has always meant that you had to shell out the bigger bucks for the high performance Evolution and Ralliart trimlines but this fall, Mitsubishi will begin offering a naturally aspirated Lancer SE with all wheel drive.

When the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer SE hits dealerships this fall with all wheel drive, it will mark the first time that the Japanese automaker has offered all wheel drive on a non-performance model Lancer. The target audience of the Mitsubishi Lancer and the high performance Lancer Evolution or Ralliart are very different groups so in the past, those buying the low cost, fuel friendly Lancer were restricted to just front wheel drive. Getting into an all wheel drive version meant that you not only had to pay a great deal more for the sport oriented and high powered Evo ($33k+) and Ralliart ($27k+) models but those performance models also fail to offer the fuel economy capacities of the less expensive Lancers.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer SE will power all four wheels with a naturally aspirated engine, reports have not yet indicated which engine it will have. The Lancer DE, ES and GTS (shown above) all currently offer naturally aspirated engines with the first two having a 2.0L mill that makes 148hp and 146lb-ft of torque while the GTS uses a 2.4L engine to make 168 horsepower and 167lb-ft of torque. Both of these engines offer vastly better fuel economy so those prospective Mitsubishi buyers who want the best possible fuel economy and the safety of the Mitsubishi advanced all wheel drive setup – the 2012 Lancer SE provides a new, low cost option.

Mitsubishi has long made popular all wheel drive models dating back into the 1980s and while these were predominantly performance models, the company’s success in the AWD field coupled with the growth of interest in fuel efficient all wheel drive cars combine to indicate that the 2012 Lancer SE could be a popular choice in today’s American auto industry. According to Automotive News, the Lancer SE with AWD could start with a price somewhere in the $20,000 range – making it substantially less expensive than the other current AWD Lancer models.
