2012 Mitsubishi I Hitting The Roads Later This Year

Charlotte-mitsubishi
When it comes to the new Mitsubishi I, there are two things that are going to separate this thing from the competition, which is why it will most likely do very well in the USA. First of all, this car looks like nothing else that you are going to see on the road today. In other words, you will undoubtedly be turning heads while driving this little guy. Second of all, this car is just way too much fun.

This Mitsubishi I differs from the Japan and Europe versions, even though it shares the same body style. Mitsubishi has been showing off similar cars in America for the past few years now, and now we US consumers are finally going to be able to own one of these. I would not even bother looking up the Japanese or European versions of this car, because this guy is new, and carries some differences with it. This car is something completely new.

The Mitsubishi I has one of those looks that you are either going to love or hate, but Mitsubishi is confident with their new little vehicle. They believe that the Mitsubishi I is what consumers want out of an electric car. They believe that people whom are looking into getting electric vehicles want vehicles that look like electric vehicles. Therefore, they are giving us the Mitsubishi I, even though it comes from gas roots.

Check out the picture we have posted of the Mitsubishi I, and see if it looks like something you could potentially be interested in. If so, I would highly suggest going to your local dealership and taking one for a test drive when they come out. These little guys are just way too much fun behind the wheel.

Mitsubishi President Confirms Next Lancer Evo with Hybrid Powertrain, May be Combined with a…Diesel!

Mitsubishi-evolution-0
Perhaps the Maya were right and the world will come to an end in December 2012. In which case we’ll never get the chance to see what a Lancer Evolution hybrid-diesel looks like in 2015.

But let's take it from the beginning. The hybrid part of the story is not just another one of those crazy rumors that pop up on the net. In fact, it is as official as it gets since it comes from the mouth of Mitsubishi president, Osamu Masuko.

Masuko revealed to British magazine Autocar that the next generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo will ditch the regular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which has become a mainstay of the 10 previous versions, in favor of a hybrid powertrain.

That, in itself, is not a surprise: an electric motor was more or less expected due to the tightening emissions regulation. The real shocker is that the British magazine says there's a very good chance it won’t be a gasoline-electric hybrid, but rather a diesel-electric hydrid. A diesel powered Evo XI? Where exactly is this world heading to?

Masuko says has set specific targets and a quite tight timeline: “I have set the goal of developing a sporting car featuring electric power. We will start work on the project next year, and it will be ready within three”, he told Autocar.

The radical powertrain switch is being forced on Mitsubishi as the company needs to reduce CO2 emissions to less than 200 g/km, while still offering a sub-five seconds 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration.

Thankfully, the 11th version of the supercar-killing Evo won’t go all eco-friendly and thrill-free on us: it will still transmit torque to all four wheels through a new version of the awesome tarmac-hugging S-AWC four-wheel drive system.

Mitsubishi Announces New 1.8-liter MIVEC Engine with Auto Stop & Go System

Mitsu-2
Mitsubishi, the Japanese automaker continues the development of new powertrains and their related technologies.

Today, Mitsubishi released the first details on its next generation 1.8-liter gasoline engine codenamed "4J10" that incorporates a new version of the company's MIVEC variable valve timing system as well as the introductions of a new Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) idle-stop technology.

The new 4J10 four-cylinder petrol with AS&G tech will make its debut in Japan this month on the domestic market RVR, Galant Fortis, Galant Fortis Sportback, followed later on by the international variants of the aforementioned models, the ASX/Outlander Sport, Lancer sedan and Lancer Sportback.

Mitsubishi says that with this combination, the three models show a 12 percent improvement in fuel efficiency in the Japanese 10-15 mode driving cycle.

One of the most important features of the new 1.8-liter engine is the latest iteration of the company's MIVEC system that continuously regulates intake valve lift, opening duration and timing.

Up until now, Mitsubishi employed two types of MIVEC systems - one that switches between different valve lifts and valve opening durations according to engine speed, and another (i.e. on the 4B10 engine) that varies the valve opening timing on a continuous basis. The new MIVEC does what the previous two systems could do separately, together and all the time.

In JDM specification, the 1.8-liter unit is rated at 139-horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 172Nm (126.9 lb-ft) at 4,200 rpm.

As for Mitsubishi's new Auto Stop & Go system, while the current version can only be used in combination of a manual gearbox, the latest variant has been developed for use on continuously variable transmissions (CVT) as well.

Mitsubishi to Co-Develop Wireless EV Charging System, Wants to Make Plugs Obsolete

Mmc-wireless-charging-0
ACEA, the European car manufacturers’ association, is pushing carmakers to adopt a common standard for charging their plug-in vehicles. And that’s a noble goal, since it will reduce complexity and costs and will eliminate many of the EVs restrictions.

The association's proposal, however, may be too little, too late. Mitsubishi has teamed up with IHI and WiTricity to develop an easily deployable wireless charging system for electric vehicles, eliminating the need for plugs and cords.

The system works by allowing transfer of energy from a source placed on or under the ground to a vehicle equipped with an energy capture device. The process of charging begins automatically once the car is parked, without any need for contact between the car and the charging source.

In case you are wondering if this is possible, WiTricity has already brought to market a magnetic resonance wireless charging system that delivers up to 3.3 kW of power over a distance of 20 cm (eight inches) with an efficiency rate of more than 90%.

Witricity CEO Eric Giler said that “electric vehicles offer great potential for reducing CO2 emissions. However they must be user friendly, and wireless charging greatly improves the user experience”.

Osamu Masuko, president of Mitsubishi, commented: “Mitsubishi is happy to enter into a new phase of electric vehicle infrastructure development. Along with WiTricity and IHI we can quickly make widespread wireless charging a reality” while his counterpart at IHI, Kazuaki Kama, added that "user friendly wireless charging will contribute to the widespread adoption of EVs, which is an important step forward for the 21st century society."

Mitsubishi: Puts The 'i' in Normal.

In an effort to prove electric cars will work even in the smaller cities of middle America, Mitsubishi Motors has launched an ad campaign touting how it is flooding the city of Normal, Ill., with up to 1,000 of its i electric cars.

We're fairly sure that the folks in Normal, population about 50,000, will like them: The town's economy counts on having a giant Mitsubishi auto plant in town. The plant makes about half the vehicles that the Japanese maker sells in the U.S.

Mitsu forgets to mention its connection to the town in the ad campaign that started yesterday. Normal is portrayed as a quick-sprouting electric-car capital of the U.S. because of all the i cars showing up there. To help foster the change, 30 high-speed electric car chargers are being installed around town.

The promotion underscores the challenge that faces electric-car makers. All the people who can afford high-priced electric cars and who are so devotedly green that they need to have one are snatching them up. But those ranks will quickly run thin. Makers now need to convince average drivers to buy electric cars as well. One would think that electric car makers would find them almost entirely in crowded, urban areas on the coasts where environmental consciousness runs high -- New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland. Not a place like Normal, which is in the center of the state isolated from the Chicago metro area.

The campaign is a prelude to a nationwide test-drive campaign for the i, which isn't on sale yet.
