The Dodge Viper has enjoyed a successful racing heritage that began in 1996 with the original Viper racing entry that earned five international GT championships and the 1997-1999 FIA GT championships. The Vipers legacy continues with second year of the Dodge Viper Cup Series 2011.
Viper Championship points leader Ben Keating took on a record number of competitors at a dual race weekend at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) July-10. The fifth and sixth rounds of the 2011 Dodge Viper Cup series had a record 19 drivers entered, including two-time-race winner A.J. Morgan and Jeff Courtney.
Various celebrity drivers are invited to compete for charity as part of the 2011 Dodge Viper Cup series season with guaranteed payouts to celebrity drivers following all 10 series races donated to their charities of choice. Dodge Motorsports donated nearly $50,000 to various charities as part of the program in 2010. ESPN Winter X-Games snowmobile freestyle gold medallist, Chris Burandt and Canadian auto writer Brian Makse are among the celebrity drivers competing at VIR.
“At the midpoint of our second season, we’re seeing some great competition in the Dodge Viper Cup series in 2011, said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Street and Racing Technology and Motorsports. “With our largest field ever this weekend at VIR, it’s certainly setting up to be an exciting and close race to crown the series champion later this year at Daytona.”
In the Dodge Viper Cup Series 2011 the Dodge Viper ACR-X combines the best performance characteristics of the record setting, street-legal Dodge Viper American Club Racer (ACR) and the safety equipment of championship-winning Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. The SRT-developed 8.4-liter V-10 engine is equipped with factory headers and a low-restriction exhaust system and produces 640 horsepower and 605 lb.-ft. of torque. With unique springs, two-way adjustable shocks and adjustable sway bar links, the suspension is tuned and upgraded for on-track use and aerodynamic upgrades that include quad-dive planes and underbody ducts improve down force and increase stability while improving grip in high-speed cornering.
“The Dodge Viper ACR-X is designed and built specifically for the race track,” Gilles said. “The Dodge Viper Cup series continues the racing legacy of the Dodge Viper right before our eyes, and we’re looking forward to another chapter being written in 2011.”
Remaining races for 2011 are: Sept. 2-4 at Texas World Speedway, College Station, Texas and Oct. 21-23 at Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla.
